The Chiriké project promotes original and enthralling music styles from several Latin-American countries. These styles include "música criolla" from Perú (festejo, landó, marinera, ...) and Venezuela (joropo, golpe, merengue in 5/8, ...), which are still not well known in Europe. The repertoire also features famous traditional songs from Cuba (son, bolero, original cha-cha-cha of the fifties, ...), as well as original compositions inspired by the tradition. To reproduce these styles the musicians play a variety of typical instruments. The sound is acoustic and characterized by a feminine lead vocal, chorus, flute, guitars, double-bass and percussions. The sound is enriched by mediterranean, classical and jazz influences bringing a fresh flavour to the traditional style. The repertoire is especially well suited for folk and ethnic music festivals and cultural events, where the Chiriké band usually plays as a sextet. For small premises the band may also play as a quartet. The project also promotes the knowledge of popular music through educational activities carried out in public schools. |
